Andrew Garfield will portray OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman in Artificial, a film dramatising the upheaval surrounding Altman’s brief removal from the artificial intelligence company in 2023.

The film follows one of Silicon Valley’s most extraordinary corporate disputes: OpenAI’s board dismissed Altman before he returned days later, after intense pressure from employees and investors. It also explores the rise of ChatGPT and the personalities involved in OpenAI’s development.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Simon Rich, Artificial features Yura Borisov as OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever and Monica Barbaro as former OpenAI executive Mira Murati. Ike Barinholtz portrays Elon Musk, who helped found OpenAI before later breaking with the company.

Distributor Neon released the first trailer this week. The film is scheduled to premiere at the New York Film Festival in October before opening in selected US cinemas on Christmas Day, with a wider release expected in January 2027.

The production comes as the rapid commercialisation of generative AI has made executives behind companies such as OpenAI increasingly prominent figures in popular culture as well as technology.
