'Inaccurate prediction causes huge loss of lives'

Absence of accurate predictions on climate changes have been causing huge loss of lives and properties across the world, especially in the Saarc region, they added.

The loss and damage to lives and properties cannot be avoided all together due to natural calamities, the experts said, adding it can be minimised by using the scenarios developed from a model.

They were addressing the inaugural session of a three-day workshop on "Regional Climate Model-PRECIS" organised by Saarc Meteorological Research Centre (SMRC) here at its seminar hall.

The workshop, part of the regular activities of SMRC, is being held to focus on application of regional climate model-PRECIS to develop climate change scenarios in the Saarc region.

Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Defense Secretary Abu M Maniruzzaman Khan said the Saarc nations have repeatedly been affected by natural calamities.

"But the predictions by Providing Regional Climates for Impacts Studies (PRECIS) model developed by Hadley Center at the UK met office can be a valuable tool for future assessment of such calamities", he said.

SMRC Director Dr Samarendra Karmaker said PRECIS can help to generate high-resolution climate change information for as many regions of the world as possible.

Brigadier General Shah Md Sultan Uddin Iqbal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Defense and Member, Governing Board of SMRC also spoke on the occasion.

Delegates from Saarc member states, including a number of scientists from Bangladesh, will present technical papers in the three-day workshop.
