Saarc Charter Day on Dec 8

Saarc Charter Day-2006 will be observed on December 8, marking the signing of the charter by seven South Asian heads of state in Dhaka 21 years ago.

The heads of state of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka signed the charter on this day in 1985. Later, Afghanistan was co-opted as another Saarc member in 2006.

To mark the day, Saarc Agricultural Information Centre (SAIC) in Dhaka has drawn up various programmes, including a seminar and photography competition and exhibition.

The seminar will be held at the conference room of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council (BARC) at 10:00am on the day. Executive Chairman of Power and Participation Research Centre Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman will present the keynote paper on the "Role of Agriculture for Promoting Rural Economics Growth and Poverty Reduction".

Agronomists, experts and policymakers will take part in the seminar.

Agriculture, Culture and Youth and Sports Adviser CM Safi Shami and Agriculture Secretary M Abdul Aziz will attend the programme.
