'Ensure access to ICT for people with disability'

The conference on 'E-Accessibility' was organised by the Institute of Hazrat Mohammad (SAW) in the city on the occasion of the International Day of Disabled Persons on December 3, says a press release.

Rubaba Dowla Matin, head of marketing department of Grameenphone was the chief guest at the programme which was attended by Ilias Khanchan, actor and convenor of Nirapad Sarak Bastabayan Committee, Dr Haider Ali, chairman of computer science department of Dhaka University, and Dr Md Abdul Munim Khan of Darul Ihsan University, as special guests.

Rubaba Dowla said Grameenphone plans to make communication easier for people with disability.

Ilias Kanchan said the society has a moral responsibility to help physically and mentally challenged people.

Dr Haider Ali underscored the importance of IT training to open doors of opportunities for people with disability.

Dr Munim said people with disability need proper education and comprehensive training to develop their hidden potential.

Abul Kalam Azad, a visually impaired student of English literature at Dhaka University, appealed to the government and affluent people to give them access to ICT.

In a keynote paper, Barrister Rizwana Yusuf of the Institute of Hazrat Mohammad, said the high cost of disability hardware, software and equipments are the main barriers to making information technology available to physically and mentally challenged persons.

President of the Institute Lt Gen (Retd) M Nooruddin Khan in his welcome address requested all to come forward and extend a helping hand towards the persons with disabilities.

Muktabur Rahman, Lt Commander Omar Farooq Hossain, Shamim Jahan, Farzana Rahman and Humayun Kabir also spoke on the occasion.
