Kofi Annan concerned
In a letter to Prime Minister Khaleda Zia issued on October 20, he said, "I am writing to you in connection with the impending installation of a non-party caretaker government and the forthcoming elections in Bangladesh."
Kofi Annan said it was encouraging that the BNP and Awami League were engaged in political dialogue for reaching an agreement on the main outstanding differences in regard to the caretaker government and election.
He also urged Khaleda to spare no efforts in finding common ground for agreement acting in the interest of democracy and the welfare of the entire nation.
"I am sure we agree that the elections should proceed unobstructed and in an atmosphere of peace and restraint," he said.
The world leader also conveyed warmest congratulations to Professor Muhammad Yunus on receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.
"Your entire nation can be justly proud of this honour," he noted.
