Addict sent to jail after his confession

Jahangir Shawkat Jewel, 25, yesterday made the confession under section 164 before Magistrate Nani Gopal Biswas.

The magistrate sent him to jail after recording his confession.

Jewel hammered his aunt, Tajifa Begum, 55, and knifed her husband Afsar Uddin Ahmed, 65, a retired warrant officer of the Air Force, to death at his East Bashabo house.

In his confessional statement, Jewel, an unemployed diploma engineer, said he became an addict by taking phensidyl out of frustration as he did not have any job.

He sold his mobile phone to buy phensidyl, and later asked his aunt to give him Tk 3,000 to buy a new one.

As Tasifa refused to pay the money, he bought a hammer, chisel and knife to threaten her, said the source in the court.

On October 17, Jewel taking the seductive drug again asked his aunt for money. On being refused, he hit her head with the hammer at about 8:00am. As his uncle Afsar came forward to protect Tasifa, Jewel stabbed him in his stomach, leaving both of them dead on the spot.
