Attack on Physician

Docs, nurses on strike at Moulvibazar hospital

Our Correspondent, Moulvibazar
Doctors and nurses of Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital enforced an indefinite strike yesterday to protest an attempt to attack a doctor.

Dr Chowdhury Omar Faruk came under attack for the second time by the same gang who assaulted him on October 4.

The gang led by Nahid, who was arrested on charge of assault but came out on bail on Wednesday, chased the doctor on his way to hospital at around 9:00am yesterday. The doctor, however, managed to escape from the wrath of the gang, sources said.

On October 4, four BNP activists assaulted Dr Chowdhury while he was on duty, prompting the doctors and nurses to call a 48-hour strike in protest.

Later, the police arrested Nahid and assured the doctors that the other accused would be arrested soon.

Protesting yesterday's incident, the Committee to Resist Repression on Physicians has called the strike for an indefinite period. Moulvibazar district unit of Bangladesh Medical Association has expressed solidarity with the strike.

Meanwhile, patients at the hospital have been suffering due to the strike as the doctors are working only at the emergency ward.

Many outdoor patients also went back without any treatment.
