CU records need care
The authorities preserve the general, recruitment and personal files of the former teachers, officials and employees for use in any case of emergency in the future.
But, these records are left without care at the university storeroom on the first floor of the administrative building despite having a particular record keeper and separate room for preserving them on the fourth floor.
The authorities remain callous to take care of the important records for an "unknown reason", said the sources at the administrative building.
They will hardly be able to produce even any of the records like that of renowned economist Prof Dr Mohammad Yunus or any other retired or resigned person if necessary, said an employee of the registrar building preferring anonymity.
At present the person appointed as "Cyclostyle Machine Operator cum Record Keeper" is now posted at the higher education section with the records, he had to take care of, are lying at the storeroom in a mess of thousands of other files, said the sources.
Mismanagement in dealing with the records started when the administrative department as well as the vice-chancellor's office were shifted from the Law Faculty building to the Dr AR Mallik Bhaban (administrative building) in 1991, sources said.
Earlier, the records were preserved at an underground room (where a cafeteria runs in a most unhygienic manner) of the Arts Faculty building for long.
The damp underground room also caused damages to some of the records during this time.
Later, the authorities allocated the present record room on the fourth floor at the administrative building.
Around three years after the construction of the new administrative building, the records were shifted to the separate record room from the underground room in 1994.
Acting Registrar Jahurul Islam admitted the present condition of records and said, "As a new Registrar, I am determined to preserve the records of a great significance and we have already taken initiatives in this regard."
