Blair accused of 'ethnic slur'

Afp, Wales
A police force in Wales said Wednesday it had received a complaint against Prime Minister Tony Blair for allegedly insulting the Welsh following results for Welsh Assembly elections in 1999. North Wales Police was looking into a formal complaint about the comment and was seeking the advice of the Crown Prosecution Service, a spokesman for the force said.

"A complaint has been received and is being reviewed," he said. "We will be seeking the advice of the CPS in relation to the content of the statement of complaint."

The CPS will apply a series of standard tests before deciding whether an investigation is worthwhile, for example if investigation would be in the public interest, and whether there would be a reasonable chance of conviction.

A Downing Street spokeswoman declined to comment on the report.

Former Downing Street press officer Lance Price claimed in recently-published memoirs that the prime minister repeatedly shouted "f...... Welsh" while watching the election results, in which his Labour Party lost a series of seats in the semi-autonomous Welsh Assembly.
