8 villagers shot dead by rebels in Tripura

Afp, Guwahati
Eight villagers were shot dead and two seriously wounded Sunday by tribal separatist rebels who roused men and women from sleep, lined them up and mowed them down with automatic weapons, police said.

The attack by the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) took place in Hazrapara village, 120km northeast of Tripura's state capital of Agartala.

"A group of six to seven NLFT rebels woke up sleeping villagers and asked them to line up before opening fire with automatic weapons from close range," police official Ramesh Debnath told AFP by telephone from Agartala.

"Eight villagers, including three women, died on the spot and two were seriously wounded in the attack."
