After Katrina, it's Rita
A new hurricane threat prompted New Orleans' mayor to suspend his call for people to return to parts of the flood-hit city and ask returnees to leave the city centre.
Mayor Ray Nagin said late Monday the decision was prompted by Tropical Storm Rita, which was nearing hurricane strength over the Bahamas and was expected to reach the US Gulf Coast by the weekend - less than a month after the unprecedented devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
"So I am encouraging everyone to leave," Nagin said in New Orleans, which was devastated by flooding after Katrina hit on August 29. The appeal applies to the downtown area, known as Orleans Parish.
