As repression on women starts within the family, it should be resisted there by changing attitudes and values of the members, said the speakers at a discussion yesterday.

They urged all irrespective of male and female members of the family to come forward to resist domestic violence against women.

The discussion titled 'Promote and practice women friendly culture in family to resist violence against women' was organised by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad at its auditorium in the city to mark the international fortnight protesting violence against women.

"As the persons concerned are the members of our family, it is possible to change their mindset through proper awareness, education and guidance within the family," said Ayesha Khanam, general secretary of the parishad.

She said the number of acid throwing incidents is the highest in Bangladesh compared to other countries in Southeast Asia.

Presided over by Vice-president of Mahila Parishad Dr Makhduma Nargis, the discussion was also addressed by Shana Kabir, Dr Maleka Banu, Advocate Masuda Rehana Begum, Rekha Chowdhury and Bela Nabi.

Young girls from different colleges and universities and journalists took part in the discussion.
