Speakers at a rally on Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus yesterday called on the opposition leaders to build national unity to protect democracy from all sorts of conspiracy and ensure safety of the people.

Vice-chancellor Prof Khandaker Mustahidur Rahman, Pro-VCs Prof Imamuddin and Prof Enamul Huq Khan and the JU Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal President Parvez Mallick spoke at the rally.

Earlier, students, teachers, officers and employees took out a procession to protest the August 21 grisly grenade attack on an Awami League rally.

Meanwhile, most classes remained suspended and examinations could not be held yesterday due to hartal enforced by the Awami League's front organisations.

Almost all schools and colleges in Savar were closed.

The AL could not take out any procession on the highway.

A large contingent of police and Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) were deployed at different points of Dhaka-Savar highway to prevent AL activists from staging any demonstration.

BNP activists, however, took out anti-hartal processions in Savar.
