Gayoom briefs Khaleda about Maldives situation

Expresses sympathy for flood victims

President of the Maldives Maumun Abdul Gayoom yesterday phoned Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and expressed sympathy for the food-hit people of Bangladesh.

He hoped that the government of Bangladesh would be able to successfully implement the second phase of post-flood rehabilitation programme to recoup the losses.

Gayoom lauded the "courage and fortitude" of the people of Bangladesh in facing the devastating floods.

President Gayoom briefed Khaleda Zia about the current situation in the Maldives.

Briefing newsmen, prime minister's press secretary said Gayoom thanked Khaleda for cordially receiving his special envoy when he came to Bangladesh during the floods.

The prime minister informed the Maldives president that by the grace of Allah the country and the people had been able to successfully deal with the first phase of relief operation.

She said the process has started to assess the overall loss in the calamity. "The UN has approached the world community to assist Bangladesh in the post-flood rehabilitation programme," she added.

Khaleda said she and the people of Bangladesh are "eagerly waiting" to receive the president of the Indian Ocean island-state during the 13th Saarc summit to be held in Dhaka January next.
