CID presses charges against 10

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday pressed charges against listed criminal 'Dakat' Shahid and nine others for the murder of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) Ward Commissioner Binoy Krishna Sarker Bina.

Investigation Officer Munshi Atiqur Rahman, also assistant superintendent of police, submitted the charge sheet to the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Dhaka.

The other accused are Russell Ahmed alias Bhuttu, Mosharraf Hossain alias Ripon, Asif Ahmed alias Sajib, Guddu alias Shamim Alam, Ahmed Aurangazeb Kabir, Ahmed Parvez Kabir, Masud Rana alias Masud, Mohammad Zakir Hossain and Rajib Chandra Nandi.

The IO dropped names of 24 including18 FIR (first information report)-named accused from the charge sheet, as the charges brought against them were not primarily proved. The IO prayed to court for clearing them of the charges.

Of the accused, 'Dakat' Shahid, who has been sentenced to life term for murdering Advocate Habuibur Rahman Mandal, is at large while the rest are in jail custody.

The IO prayed for issuance of warrant of arrest against Shahid and attachment of his moveable property.

In the charge sheet, the IO showed 47 people as prosecution witnesses. During the investigation, the IO collected 11 evidence of Bina murder.

Three unidentified gunmen shot and killed Bina, a ruling BNP-backed commissioner of ward No. 72 of the DCC, at Tanti Bazar Swarna Patti in the old part of the city at about 7:30pm on May 22, 2002.

Bina's wife Sharika Sarker filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station on May 25 accusing 26 people including Shahid.
