'Azad and Contemporary Society' launched

The daily Azad had protected the rights of the Muslims of the then Bengal since its inception, said Information Minister M Shamsul Islam yesterday.

He was speaking at a publication ceremony of a book titled 'Azad and contemporary society: editorial 1936-1971 in the city. The Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) published the book.

The minister said the Azad played an important role in sociopolitical, cultural and economic development.

The difference between the then East Bengal and West Bengal could be understood by reading the editorials of the Daily Azad which once guided the backward people of this region, he said.

Shamsul Islam said the present and future generations would get a true political, economical, social and cultural picture of the period from the book.

Chaired by Director General of PIB Dr Rezwan Siddiqui, the function was also addressed by Information Secretary AMM Nasiruddin, Prof Dr Sayed-Ur Rahman of Dhaka University, Joint Editor of daily Manab Zamin Sajjad Kadir and Sima Moslem.
