A unique protest

Staff Correspondent, Rajshahi
Wrapping a shroud around his body, a human rights activist and journalist travelled nearly 30 km across the Rajshahi city in a rickshaw-van to protest the grenade attack on an Awami League rally in Dhaka, Islamist fanatics' threats to the daily Prothom Alo and repression of newsmen.

With the slogan, 'Awake your conscience and save the country', Zahangir Alam Akash, a staff reporter of the daily Sangbad, visited almost every corner of the city from Kumarpara to Laxmipur, Court to City Bhaban and Rajshahi University to Zero Point during his two and a half hours' protest.

He started his unique mission from Rajshahi Metropolitan Press Club at 10.00am.

Police, however, intercepted and assaulted Akash without any provocation when he was entering the Rajshahi University campus through Kajla gate.

They also confined him to RU police box for about 20 minutes.

"Policemen misbehaved with me although we have constitutional right to stage peaceful protests," Akash told reporters.

At the end of his protest, Akash addressed a gathering of about 200 people at the Zero Point. He called on all to unite against the terrorists to save the country.
