Nari Uddog Kendra (NUK), an NGO for women development, yesterday urged the government to start BRTC bus service on all city routes with advance ticket counter for women passengers.

"Though some private bus services have set up such counters in some routes, the price of tickets is so high that women passengers of middle and lower classes can not afford," said NUK Executive Director

Mashuda Khatun Shefali at a press conference at the National Press Club in the city.

She said the government should control the price of ticket in private bus services.

Of the total bus passengers in the city, 30 percent are women. But only few buses are plying for women creating untold sufferings for them, said Mashhuda.

She demanded more buses for women passengers specially in the pick hour to avoid their harassment.

Mashhuda urged the government to set up enough passenger sheds and separate public toilets there for women passengers.

"We also urge the government to start driving training for women and reserve 15 percent quota for them in government service," she said.

Shahnaz Shahin, Nasim Ferdaus, Nazma Yeasmin, Shahana Begum and Shamima Afroz were present at the press conference.
