Rab-criminals gunfight in Ctg: Five arrested

A team of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested five criminals after a brief gunfight at Agrabad in the port city yesterday morning, foiling their attempt to rob a businessman.

One of the criminals, Amar Das, 24, who was wounded during the gunfight, was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

The Rab also recovered five LGs, 14 bullets, 13 bombs and a knife as the armed gang was waiting at the Barik Building intersection to waylay the businessman who was scheduled to pass through the way after withdrawing Tk 8.5 lakh from nearby Brac Bank.

Tipped off, the Rab team took positions around the area and encircled the gang at around 8.00am, prompting a shootout. Both the sides exchanged at least five round of bullets before the criminals gave up.

Four other arrestees are Habibur Rahman, 21, Abul Kalam, 23, Azizul Haq, 20, and Mohammad Matin, 22. They were taken to the Rab headquarters at Patenga for questioning.

The businessman requested the Rab not to reveal his identity fearing reprisals.
