Govt urged to provide credit to unemployed youths
They also called on the government to take up reality-based training programmes for both educated and uneducated youths to resolve the unemployment problem.
The Alliance for Development Support and Cooperation (ADSC) organised the seminar on 'Youth poverty: Present context and future dimension' at the Planning and Development Academy auditorium.
Prof Abul Barakat of economics department, Dhaka University, presented a keynote paper. Khushi Kabir, chairperson of ADSC, presided over the seminar.
The speakers said lack of access to education and training and lack of job opportunities and social peace are the main causes of youth poverty.
The government should incorporate the issue of youth poverty into the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper, they suggested.
"There are 4 crore and 40 lakh youths in the country and this number will stand at 6 crore and 10 lakh by 2020," said Prof Barakat.
Population momentum, unwanted fertility and large family size, especially for the hope of a boy child, are the main causes of population boom, he pointed out.
Prof Rowshan Ara, cartoonist Shishir Bhattacharya, Dr Ahmed Kamal and actress Subarna Mustafa also spoke.
