Tk 27cr Brac budget for flood-hit people

Brac has planned to spend Tk 27 crore for relief and post-flood rehabilitation in the flood-hit areas.

Brac has received Tk 20 crore from DFID, WFP, and UNDP, as well as from NOVIB, CIDA, DANIDA, Nike Foundation and Columbia University, USA to implement its flood relief work.

Besides Brac's contribution from its own fund, its 62,000 employees have donated their one-day salary.

Other national organisations: IPDC, Eastern Bank Limited, Brac Bank, Delta Brac Housing Finance Corporation and Brac University have also contributed to Brac's flood relief programmes in response to the appeal to the Bangladeshi nationals.

Brac has received donations in cash and kind worth Tk 20 lakh.

It is now conducting its flood relief operations in 38 districts with its 5,000 full-time and 15,000 part-time employees. It distributed dry food like chira, chapatti, molasses and biscuits especially for children. Brac is sending containers of purified water tested by ICDDR,B to those areas where there is a scarcity of safe drinking water.

Besides distribution of oral saline, its employees are also distributing and giving instructions to flood victims on using water purifiers like fitkiri. Brac is also repairing the damaged tubewells in the flood-affected areas as well as installing slab latrines in Dhaka.

At present 36 medical teams are working in 18 districts.

Brac is also implementing its flood relief operation through 430 local NGOs in 29 districts from its own fund.

The relief operation is being followed by rehabilitation work.

Brac has started giving soft loans as house repairing assistance to Brac group members. Tk 13 crore has been allocated for repair of house.
