British High Commissioner in Dhaka Anwar Chowdhury yesterday paid a courtesy call on Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina and discussed bilateral issues including the present state of democracy, governance, human rights and law and order situation in Bangladesh.

Emerging from around the 90-minute meeting at Hasina's Dhanmondi residence, the British envoy said they discussed various issues apart from private matters, and the discussion was "very positive".

"I'm very happy over the discussion as it was a very positive meeting. It was a normal meeting," he said.

Asked about the attack on him in Sylhet on May 21 that left him injured, he said he would not make any comment on the issue.

Briefing newsmen over the meeting, Sheikh Hasina's Political Secretary Saber Hossain Chowdhury said various issues, particularly bilateral relations and the country's present situation, came up at the meeting for discussion.

He said the AL president requested the envoy to take initiatives for more British investment in the country.

"We have also discussed how the parliamentary democracy could be strengthened and the voting system be improved," Saber said.
