The government plans to introduce sophisticated machine-readable passport (MRP) for the citizens of Bangladesh.

Commerce Minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury told the Parliament yesterday in reply to a question from Shamsur Rahman Sharif of Awami League. He replied to the question in absence of State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar.

A committee has been formed for the MRP and it is working in this regard, he said. "After submission of the report by the committee to the government, it is expected that the plan will be executed in the shortest possible time," he added.

He said after implementation of the plan, anyone submitting the existing passport would be eligible to have an MRP. However, necessary fees will be charged for the purpose.

Replying to a supplementary from Sharif, he said the "visa-free movement" was a good move. But its fate was still not clear, he added. "I can't tell you the government position on the matter, but personally I support it," he said.
