Awami Jubo League, youth front of the opposition Awami League, yesterday held a rally in the city protesting the filing of a graft case against Leader of the Opposition and AL President Sheikh Hasina and Joint Secretary Obaidul Kader.

Addressing the rally at Muktangan in the city, AL presidium member Abdus Samad Azad said the government was trying to harass AL leaders through filing false cases. He urged the party leaders and activists and countrymen to expedite the movement to oust the government from power.

"On one hand the government is wasting crores of public money by erecting a permanent bridge in front of the Ziaur Rahman's graveyard on the other hand filing false cases against AL leaders," Samad Azad said.

The government is trying to erase the name of Bangabandhu hatching plot against the AL leaders and workers, he said.

"The government is paying more attention to harass the AL leaders and workers than tackling the law and order downslide and price hike of essentials," he added.

"The security of common people is under threat as the ruling party cadres even do not hesitate to kill police personnel to maintain their reign of terror across the country," he said.

AL Organising Secretary Saber Hossain Chowdhury said the government filed a graft case against Hasina but it would never be able to prove the charge.

Presided over by Jubo League chairman Jahnagir Kabir Nanak, the rally was also addressed by Meher Afroz Chumki and Mirza Azam MP.

Police intercepted the Jubo League leaders and workers when they tried to bring out a procession at Muktangan after the rally.

At one stage police chased some Jubo League activists when they tried to cross their cordon.
