Environment education underscored

State Minister for Environment and Forest Jafrul Islam Chowdhury has underscored the importance of environment education for environmental conservation and natural resources management.

He was addressing the inaugural session of the 12th Environment Congress for Asia and Pacific in Japan on Saturday, according to a message received in Dhaka yesterday.

Japanese Minister for Environment Yuriko Koike inaugurated the congress attended by 22 countries from Asia and the Pacific region.

Jafrul, who is leading the Bangladesh delegation, highlighted the steps taken by the Bangladesh government for conservation of environment.

He listed out some successful measures: ban on polythene shopping bag, promotion of afforestation and introduction of environment-friendly CNG three-wheelers.

He also informed the meeting that the government has taken an initiative to introduce environment curricula in primary and secondary education.

The Japanese environment minister lauded the Bangladesh's success in banning polybags and other measures for the preservation of environment.

Delegations from Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam took part in the two-day meet.
