Free cataract surgery campaign ends

Standard Chartered Bank completed its free cataract surgery campaign to restore sight to 1800 people at the Islamia Eye Hospital in the city on June 10, says a press release.

Matiur Rahman, editor of the Prothom Alo, opened the bandage of the child who was the 1800th patient to receive the free surgery at the hospital. Zaheda Ispahani, advisor to the Islamia Eye Hospital, and M Aminul Huque, head of Human Resources of Standard Chartered Bank, were present.

The campaign was sponsored by the Standard Chartered Bank employees in Singapore. Euleeen Goh, chief executive officer of Standard Chartered Bank, Singapore handed over a cheque for the sponsorship during her visit to Dhaka last year. The amount has been used in Bangladesh to provide free cataract surgeries to the poor and the needy.

The sponsorship was part of the "Seeing is Believing" initiative of the bank which restored sight to 56,000 people throughout the world last year.
