An outlaw was killed and five police officers were injured during a pre-dawn gunfight between police and armed cadres of Purbo Banglar Communist Party (M-L) in Greenland slum area close to the Skid Ghat in Khulna yesterday.

The dead was identified as Raja Chowdhury, 22, an armed cadre of PBCP and prime accused in two double murder cases.

The injured -- AC (South) Anis Ahmed and Sub-Inspectors Shafiqur Rahman, Anisur Rahman, Koushik Ahmed and Arman Ali -- received treatment at the police hospital.

OC Mosharef Hossain said Raja was arrested from Satkhir Ghose Dairy at Ahsan Ahmed Road on Wednesday midnight.

When police took him to the slum area at around 4.00am to recover firearms on the basis of his confession, the outlaw cadres launched an armed and bomb attack.

However, the cadres managed to flee.

Later, a home-made revolver loaded with four bullets and five bombs were recovered from the area.

According to DC (South) Akbar Ali, Raja was a listed criminal.

Meanwhile, Razia Begum, mother of Raja Chowdhury and wife of BNP activist Mintoo Chowdhury, accused Sub-Inspectors Arman and Koushik of killing her son.

Raja was innocent but he was tortured to death as the police officers failed to realise money from him illegally, she alleged at a press conference.

Razia sought intervention of the government in the matter and demanded exemplary punishment to the persons involved.
