A Dhaka Court yesterday sentenced three muggers to death for killing the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Inspector Nazrul Islam on July 25 in 2002 in the city.

Judge AR Masud of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 gave the verdict in presence of the convicts Hazrat Ali Bhuti, Liton Sardar and Mohammad Kamal.

The convicts can appeal to the High Court against the verdict in 30 days, the judgement said.

The court also acquitted Abdul Kadir as the charges brought against him were not proved.

Earlier, the prosecution and defence completed their arguments on June 2 and the court recorded statements of 13 prosecution witnesses.

Nazrul was stabbed to death by a gang of muggers at Asad Gate bus stand in the city while he was returning home in an auto-rickshaw on July 25 in 2002.

Soon after the incident the pedestrians caught three of the gang red-handed while another managed to escape. Later, SI Khondaker Khalid Hussain took the victim to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.

A murder case was filed accusing four muggers with Mohammadpur Police Station the same day. The investigation officer pressed charges against Hazrat Ali, Liton Sarder, Mohammad Kamal and Mohammad Kadir on December 15 in 2002.

The court framed charges against the accused on May 22 last year. The case was transferred to the Speedy Trial Tribunal on January 12 this year for quick disposal and its trial was completed in 120 working days.

The victim's wife Sufia Nazrul and her son Sajib were present in the court during the pronouncement of the verdict and they were satisfied with the judgement.
