'Keep separate zone for educational instts in city planning'

City planners should keep a separate zone for schools and other institutions in their city planning, said the speakers at a roundtable on Thursday.

They said previously the city planning department of Rajdhani Unnayan Katripakkha (Rajuk) used to mention some areas as education zone in its planning but now they don't, and this has helped in turning the residential area into commercial one.

The roundtable on ' Motto and location of educational institutions in urban planning' was organised by Dhanmondi Paribesh Jote at the Institution of Law and International Affairs auditorium in the city.

Conducted by Prof Muzzafar Ahmed, the roundtable specially dealt with the mushrooming of English-medium schools and private universities in Dhanmondi.

The speakers said most of the schools operating in the city do not have facility for quality education. Even they do not have institutional set up to be a school in its real sense, they added.

The speakers said most of the schools do not have any playground which is essential for proper physical and mental growth of the children.

Prof Nazrul Islam, an urban expert, said although the authorities concerned do not follow the principles of proper city planning, they can still start to follow them for proper development of the city.

He suggested the involvement of children in the city planning process as they are the future of the country.

Prof Muzaffar Ahmed said there is so much anarchy in the society that could be removed by eliminating the discrimination in educational opportunities.

Khurshid Erfan Ahmed of Ain O Salish Kendra, Rawshan Haq of Women for Women, Nazma Begum of Nari Pakkha, Nilufar Manzur of Sun Beam School, Sultana Alam of Dhanmondi Paribesh Jote and Abu Naser Khan of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon addressed the roundtable.
