One gets death
Convict Shariful Haque alias Koyel, 35, son of Sajahanul Haque, a resident of Upashar area under Boalia Police Station, was also fined Tk one lakh.
Tribunal Judge AFM Aminul Islam found the convict guilty under the section 4/1 of the Prevention of Women and Children Repression Special Act 2000 and read out the 22-page judgement in a crowded courtroom.
The prosecution story in brief is that the convict poured kerosene on his wife Shahana Akhter Shima and set her on fire following a feud on August 11, 2003. Victim Shahana, 28, was 8-month pregnant during the incident.
Victim's father lodged a case with Boalia thana on the following day accusing Shariful Islam.
After investigation police pressed charges against him on October 20 the same year. The tribunal examined 16 prosecution witnesses and other relevant evidences during the trial.
Special Public Prosecutor Ketab Uddin conducted the case on behalf of the state while Advocates Abu Muhammad Selim and Abu Raihan Al Biruni defended the accused.
