'Stop repression on Proshika employees'

Ten noted personalities have called on the government to stop repression on the employees of Proshika, a non-governmental organisation working tirelessly to improve the socio-economic conditions of the poor.

In a statement yesterday, they expressed concern over the arrest and harassment of the NGO staffs and attacks on its offices across the country.

If there is any allegation of wrongdoing against Proshika, then lawful action should be initiated rather than resorting to threats and repression, they said, adding that any problem should be solved through democratic way.

"We want that Proshika should be allowed to carry on its development activities as lakhs of people are getting benefits from its activities," the statement said.

The signatories to the statement include poet Shamsur Rahman, justice KM Sobhan, Prof. Mustafa Nurul Islam, Prof. Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, Prof. Anisuzzaman, singer Kalim Sharafi, artists Qayyum Chowdhury and Hashem Khan, Dr. Atiur Rahman and Prof. Kabir Chowdhury.
