Modern signalling system on Dhaka-Sylhet rly route soon

Bangladesh Railway is introducing modern signalling and interlocking system on the Dhaka-Sylhet route under a project aimed at quicker and safe train service.

Managing Director (Project) of the Bangladesh Railway, M Abdullah and Vice President of South Korean LG Industrial Systems Limited signed an agreement to this effect on behalf of their respective sides at Railway Bhaban yesterday.

In the first phase of the project, 10 stations, out of total 22 in the Akhaura-Sylhet section, will be brought under the system at a cost of about Tk 80 crore.

The stations are Azampur, Mukundapur, Haraspur, Montola, Itakhola, Noapara, Shahjibazar, Sayestaganj junction, Kulaura junction and Sylhet.

The project work will be completed within 24 months and tender process for the rest 12 stations is also at the final stage, sources said.

The present old signalling system on the Akhaura-Sylhet section is half hand-operated and half-mechanised, which makes it possible to run a train 48km per hour.

With the change of the system, trains will pick up a speed as high as 80 kilometers per hour.

Communications Secretary Mohammad Shafiqul Islam and Director General of Bangladesh Railway AFM Mustafizur Rahman were present at the agreement signing ceremony.
