Transport strike in Sylhet May 16
The parishad leaders made an announcement to this effect from a rally at Dakshin Surma Bus Terminal on Wednesday night.
They also handed over a memorandum to the deputy commissioner yesterday afternoon about their demands.
Chaired by Azizur Rahman Ambia, the rally protested armed attacks on transport workers and damage of trucks by college students at Tilagarh and Islampur on May 8.
Students of MC College and Sylhet Government College went on rampage following the death of a fellow student by a speeding truck.
The transport workers also made a counter attack on the college hostel same day.
The rally expressed concern as local political leaders and administration did not take any measure to cool the situation.
It also called for immediate punitive measures against those involved in the rampage.
The demands of transport owners include establishment of a truck terminal in city, repair of the South Surma Bus Terminal, dissolution of the so called Bus Malik Samity and establishment of a permanent stand for microbuses and rickshaws at Chouhatta.
