CUP concerned over arrest of Proshika staff

The Coalition for the Urban Poor (CUP), a networking organisation of NGOs, yesterday expressed concern over the arrest of employees of Proshika, slum dwellers and poor people in the last week of April.

The arrests of staff members of Proshika, a private development organisation, and others are a violation of human rights, the CUP said in a press release.

It said if there is concrete evidence of wrongdoings against any NGO staff, lawful action should be initiated instead of harassment that hinders development activities.

Police made the arrests without any logical reason, the CUP said and urged the government to stop such harassment.

The poor people are now facing cases but they could not afford to pay for the legal assistance, the CUP said.
