Release of BCL men demanded

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of the opposition Awami League, yesterday demanded immediate release of its leaders and activists arrested during the AL's no-confidence demonstrations and its programme to lay siege to Hawa Bhaban.

About 300 leaders and workers of different BCL units have been languishing in jail, the BCL leaders said at a press conference on Dhaka University campus.

They were tortured mentally and physically in the police custody, they said.

The student leaders demanded immediate arrest of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) cadres who sexually abused a female student and attacked the teachers and students at Sahajalal University of Science and Technology recently.

The BCL leaders urged the university authorities to ensure peaceful coexistence of students at different dormitories.

The leaders announced a series of demonstrations beginning today to press for their demands.

They also threatened to call hartal and student strike if their demands are not met by May 10.

BCL President Liaqat Sikder read out a written statement at the press conference.
