CUTA election today

Yellow panel backed by Pro-Awami League and left-leaning teachers and White panel backed by pro-BNP-Jamaat teachers are contesting the election.

Prof. Dr Nurul Anwar of microbiology and Prof. Dr Gazi Saleh Uddin of sociology are vying for the posts of president and general secretary from the Yellow panel.

The White panel candidates for the two posts are Prof Dr Md Badiur Rahman of philosophy and Prof. Dr Obaidul Karim of sociology.

A total of 581 voters will elect their leaders for the 11 posts of the association. The voting will be held from 9.00am to 1.00pm.

Earlier, the progressive Pink panel had split into two factions -- pink panel and blue panel -- over personal interests of some teachers.

But the two panels have united on Sunday and announced a fresh Yellow panel for the election.

Meanwhile, Professor Dr Moinul Islam of economics was elected dean of social science faculty of Chittagong University on Thursday.

Dr Islam, a candidate of Pink panel backed by progressive teachers, bagged 48 votes while his rival Professor Abul Kalam Azad of the same department got 28 votes.

Prof. Azad was a candidate of White panel backed by BNP-Jamaat.
