'Raise awareness about AIDS'

Staff Correspondent
Speakers at a workshop yesterday called for raising awareness about the deadly disease HIV/AIDS.

They said people from all walks of life including political and religious leaders should come forward to help control the disease.

The speakers said Bangladesh is vulnerable to HIV/AIDS as its neighbouring countries like India and Myanmar are badly affected by the disease.

The workshop on "HIV/AIDS in Uganda: Lessons learnt for Bangladesh" was organised by the Volunteer Services Overseas (VSO) in the city.

Representatives from three other organisations who visited Uganda early this year placed a report at the workshop on the African country's efforts to fight the disease.

The report suggested active participation of national and local governments in the campaign against HIV/AIDS.

The organisations, HASAB Bangladesh, Light House and Ashar Alo, are working on HIV/AIDS.

Clive Ingleby of VSO Bangladesh, Dr Malay Kanti Mridha and Dr Afroz Mahal of HASAB took part in the discussion.
