'EPZ trade union issue to be finalised soon'

The government will finalise the issue of trade union in the export processing zones within a month.

This was stated by Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman when US Ambassador Harry K Thomas called on him at his office yesterday, sources said.

The finance minister told the ambassador that a bill would be placed before the parliament in this regard very soon.

Later, Saifur Rahman told the waiting journalists that the Korean investors hold different opinion on this issue. They sought a three-year timetable for introducing the trade union in EPZs, he added.

The minister said a draft bill was submitted to all stakeholders to seek their opinion in this regard.

The bill would be placed at the parliament after getting their opinion.

Harry K Thomas told the journalists that the assurance regarding the introduction of trade union in the EPZs would be implemented soon.
