JCD factional feud may trigger violence at JU
At least five students, including three JCD activists, have been injured in the attacks since the formation of the new JCD committee on March 3.
Tension has been running high as the rival faction activists are also planning to resist the attacks.
Many JCD activists belonging to Mamun-led rival faction that failed to get any post on the new committee have been staying away from the campus following the attacks, sources said.
Kamal, a 2nd year student of archaeology and JCD activist aligned to Zahir group, was beaten up in the TV room of Al-Beruni Hall on March 9.
A group of eight JCD cadres led by Mukta, a resident of Kamal Uddin Hall, attacked him with sticks at around 4:00pm, witnesses said.
With severe injuries in his head, Kamal is now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College hospital.
The JCD cadres also beat up Khairul, a second year student of Bangla, on the midnight of March 8 as he refused to join a JCD procession.
A JCD group led by Palash and Zia, two residents of Shahid Salam Barkat Hall, beat him at the hall's guestroom and injured him seriously, sources said. Palash and Zia, however, denied the allegation.
Sifat, a student of statistics and member of the Zahir group, came under attack after he left a JCD procession to attend his class on March 7.
Rubel, a student of Botany, was beaten up on March 6 on the grounds that he took part in the students' demonstrations against the deadlock in academic activities in December last year.
The JCD cadres also beat up Bappi, who was close to Mamun group, on March 5.
The cadres have resorted to repression in vengeance and to establish supremacy on the campus, the JCD workers alleged, saying that they have also warned their rival faction members to leave the hall and the campus.
JCD General Secretary Nazmul Hasan Avi dismissed the allegations but said the JCD activists have beaten up some drug addicts to check mugging incidents by the addicts on the campus.
