Mystery shrouds death of CCC official

Mystery has shrouded the death of an official of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), who was also the younger brother of a BNP leader.

Jahangir Alam Sharif, 38, deputy taxation inspector and brother of Chittagong City BNP's organising secretary and former ward commissioner FH Khan Fazu, died on Wednesday night.

He went out of his residence at Meah Khan Nagar in Bakalia in the morning to attend his office but did not return home until 11.00pm when an anonymous caller told his family members that Sharif was sick and undergoing treatment at Center Point Hospital in Jamal Khan area.

The family member immediately rushed to the hospital only to found him dead.

Although the 'death certificate' mentioned 'cardiac arrest' as a reason for his death, family members believe he was murdered.

Hospital sources said four people brought Sharif to the clinic in an autorickshaw at around 10.45pm and left immediately, leaving the body at emergency room.

"Sharif was brought dead to our clinic and no apparent injury marks were found in his body," said Iqbal Faruque, manager (administration) of the clinic, yesterday evening.

Kotowali Thana police said they received the body yesterday morning along with the death certificate and sent it to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) morgue for autopsy.

Sources said Sharif, who also ran a business, called at his home by his cell phone on Wednesday afternoon to say that he was staying at Hotel Agrabad for business purpose and would return home late in the night.

A close relative of the family said, "Sharif had a feud with his business partners over some dealings and this could be a reason behind the murder."

Sharif's elder brother Fazu said they would lodge a case on the basis of the post-mortem report. An unnatural death case has been filed with Kotowali police.
