BBC film team visits GP village phone site

A BBC documentary team visited a village phone site of GrameenPhone yesterday to film the activities of a woman phone operator in Manikganj district, says a press release.

The team visited phone operator Abida Sultana's home in village Athalia and filmed her activities as a 'Village Phone Lady' as a part of the BBC documentary series titled 'Himalaya with Michael Palin'

Presenter of the documentary Michael Palin was accompanied by Naila Chowdhury, customer relations director of GrameenPhone, during the visit. She also acted as an interpreter during the interview with Abida.

The BBC team is visiting Bangladesh as part of its 2,000-mile journey from Afghanistan to the Bay of Bengal to film the documentary.

The mobile phone operated by Abida Sultana in Athalia village, some 40 km from the capital, is the only telephone in the area. The village does not have any electricity and the mobile phone is recharged with power from solar panels installed by Grameen Shakti.
