Tommy Miah to cook in British parliament kitchen

The owner of Edinburgh's prestigious Raj Restaurant has become the first non-staff chef to be invited to cook in the kitchen of British parliament, says a press release.

Tommy Miah will prepare some of his special recipes in advance of a reception on January 15 to announce the eight finalists in his annual International Indian Chef of the Year Competition. The reception is hosted by Alex Salmond MP.

Salmond, parliamentary leader of the Scottish National Party, is a regular supporter of the competition and one of this year's judges.

The final in the competition, introduced 12 years ago to promote innovation and quality in ethnic cuisine, will be held on February 13 at Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh.

It will be followed by the annual Curry Ball, whose profits go to support Sreepur Village founded by former BA hostess Pat Kerr.

Tommy Miah has established an enviable reputation since arriving in the UK as a boy of 10.

He has cooked on many celebrity occasions and founded Britain's first entirely Indian-themed hotel. He won entry to the Guinness Book of Records for cooking the world's largest curry, and has written five cookery books.
