Fine art students protest construction of canteen
At a press conference, the students said such a canteen, if constructed, would pull outsiders in large numbers, vitiating the atmosphere congenial to practice of arts.
The students also staged a demonstration. They painted pictures on the road in front of the institute in a protest against the authorities' move to construct the canteen.
The institute canteen was leased out temporarily to former JCD leader Monwar Hossain Rana.
The Dhaka University authorities have started construction of the canteen at the institute and a tree has been cut for it, the students said.
They said all the trees of the institute were planted by eminent artist Zainul Abedin but the DU authorities cut the tree to facilitate the construction of the canteen.
The students had earlier submitted a memorandum to Vice-Chancellor Prof. SMA Faiz and exchanged views with the institute Director Prof. Abdus Sattar to press for their demand.
