Resist attempts to distort history in textbooks: Jalil

Awami League General Secretary Abdul Jalil yesterday said the BNP-Jamaat alliance government has been trying to distort the glorious history of the country by undermining the sprit of the liberation war in 1971.

He was speaking as chief guest at a rally organised by the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) to protest the distortion of the country's history in textbooks at the Central Shaheed Minar in the city.

Jalil said any attempt to include fabricated story in textbooks must be resisted at any cost.

He directed the BCL leaders and workers to visit every schools of the country to tell the new generation about the true history of the country.

AL Publicity Secretary Mohammad Asaduzzaman MP said unfortunately a certain quarter, who opposed the liberation war in 1971, is now in power.

They are trying to distort the history of the country, but it would not be tolerated, he added.

Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique said attempt to distort the history of the country began following the killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

This distortion could be observed in the textbooks from class one to intermediate level books, he added.

BCL leaders said the coalition government has been misguiding the younger generation by including false and fabricated story in textbooks.

Demanding immediate resignation of the education minister, they threatened to launch tougher movement if the government do not include correct history of the country in textbooks.

Presided over by BCL President Liaqat Sikder, the rally was also addressed by General Secretary Nazrul Islam Babu, Delwar Hossain and Hemayet Uddin Khan Himu.
