Three JCD men expelled from JU hall
The decision to expel them was taken at a hall committee meeting presided over by hall provost Prof A K M Shahnewaz who had earlier issued a five-day ultimatum to the three men to pay their canteen dues.
The expelled activists include the daily Dinkal JU Correspondent Sirajul Islam Siraj, a third-year student of government and politics department and the assistant publication and literature secretary of the JU unit of JCD, who led the attack on Thursday.
The two others are Ataul Ghani Dalim, assistant general secretary of JU unit of JCD, and Rezaul Karim Raju, students of the history department. All three men were residents of Salam Barkat Hall.
Dalim and Raju also assaulted owner of the canteen Kaji Mujibul Haque, 70, later on Thursday and told him to withdraw the complaints or face consequences, sources said.
Siraj, who had been expelled from the Jahangirnagar University Journalists' Association for his involvement in forging hall coupons, occupied the Association office after assaulting its president on July 7. But no action has been taken against him.
Two other JCD activists -- Delwar of Geography department and Imran of History department -- had also been served showcause notices on August 5 for not paying their canteen bills.
"The JCD activists, who were expelled for violating hall rules are threatening me over telephone. Earlier I gave them a five-day ultimatum to pay the outstanding bills. But they didn't pay heed," said hall Provost Prof A K M Shahnewaz.
Raju and Dalim however said they were unaware of the allegations and that the expulsion letter was served without any warning. "The expulsion was intended to tarnish our image on the campus," they said.
