BNP accused of 'AL cleansing'

Leaders of the main opposition Awami League (AL) yesterday repeated their accusations against the government of conspiring to "cleanse" opposition forces through political persecution.

The ruling party men already killed some promising AL leaders in a planned way, they said, adding that the recent attack on party leader Tofail Ahmed in Bhola was a part of the 'AL cleansing plan'. They alleged that ruling BNP men attacked Tofail Ahmed to kill him.

The AL leaders were addressing a rally in front of the party's Bangabandhu Avenue office yesterday as part of their countrywide protest against the attack on Tofail Ahmed.

People have no confidence in the present regime as the government is busy making common people's lives miserable, the AL leaders told the rally. They want freedom from their tyranny, they added.

They said the government sponsored atrocities against the leaders and activists of the main opposition as the AL is organising itself against the misdeeds of the ruling alliance.

Demanding midterm polls without delay, the AL leaders urged people to launch a tough movement to oust the ruling 'anti-people' government.

Abdus Samad Azad addressed the rally as chief guest with Mohammad Hanif in the chair. The rally was also addressed by Sazeda Chowdhury, Abdur Razzak, Abdul Jalil, Suranjit Sengupta, Mukul Bose, Sultan Mohammad Mansur and Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya.
