AL hartal tomorrow

Main opposition Awami League (AL) and its front organisations brought out separate processions and rallies yesterday in support of the countrywide dawn to dusk hartal tomorrow.

The hartal has been called to protest the proposed budget for the fiscal 2003-04.

The decision to enforce the hartal was taken at a meeting of the AL presidium members on June 15.

Earlier, the party enforced an eight-hour countrywide hartal on June 12 while its student wing, Chhatra League, sponsored another six-hour shutdown on June 19.

In a statement yesterday, General Secretary of the AL Abdul Jalil said the budget was 'anti-people and undemocratic'. He also criticised the government for deterioration in law and order.

A press release of the AL said all thana units of the city AL held rallies urging people to observe tomorrow's hartal to protest the misdeeds of the BNP-Jamaat coalition government.

Mohammad Hanif and Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, president and general secretary of the city AL, also urged people to observe the hartal.
