Main opposition Awami League (AL) observes its 54th founding anniversary today.

Party President Sheikh Hasina will place a wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangabandhu Bhaban at around 7:30am.

The party will hold a discussion titled "Struggle of Bangladesh Awami League in the context of present day Bangladesh" at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium at 3:00pm. Sheikh Hasina will be present at the meeting as chief guest.

The AL was formed in 1949 and led the nation in the independence movement and war in 1971.

On the eve of party's 54th founding anniversary, AL President Sheikh Hasina urged people to launch a movement against the BNP-Jamaat alliance government.

Terming the government "autocratic and fascist" she said her party members would no more tolerate the killings, repression and threat on party workers.

AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil, in statement yesterday, urged all the leaders and workers of the party to observe the day.
