Peaceful hartal in Jhenidah

A half-day hartal passed off peacefully in Jhenidah yesterday.

The district unit of Awami League enforced the hartal to protest the attack on party MP Abdul Hye and three other leaders of its front organisations by a group of armed men reportedly belonging to the ruling party during hartal hours on Thursday.

No untoward incident took place anywhere in the district.

Educational institutions and business establishments in the district remained closed and vehicles were off the roads during the hartal.

Meanwhile, two separate cases have been filed with sadar police station in connection with Thursday's incident.

Chhatra Dal President Ashraful Islam Pinto has filed a case accusing 26 leaders and activists of Awami League and injured AL MP Abdul Hye has filed another case naming 20 leaders and activists of BNP and Chhatra Dal as accused.

Police have so far nabbed five people for their alleged involvement in attack.

Chhatra Dal in its FIR has stated that one of its leaders has been missing since Thursday evening. But the missing leader has not been named in the FIR, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station said.
