BCL vows to launch 'oust-govt' movement

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student front of the main opposition Awami League, yesterday vowed to launch an 'oust-government' movement to put an end to the repression by BNP-Jamaat alliance.

"Peace will not be restored as long as this autocratic, repressive ruling alliance remains in power," BCL President Liakat Sikder said at a press conference in the city.

He alleged that the ruling party's lawmakers, ministers, and even the prime minister are harbouring criminals who have gunned down BCL leader Saiful Rasul Palash.

Palash, general secretary of city's north unit, was killed near a bus ticket counter at Kalyanpur in the city on June 16. The BCL enforced a six-hour nationwide hartal yesterday to protest the killing.

The government is now spreading propaganda in a bid to protect the real killers, said BCL General Secretary Nazrul Islam Babu.

He accused the government of trying to muzzle the voice of its political opponents through killing and repression.

The BCL leaders announced a weeklong programme, beginning today, to protest the killing of Palash.

A qurankhwani and milad mahfil will also be held at the BCL office after Maghrib prayers today.

As part of the protests, the BCL will stage a rally in front of the BCL office in the city tomorrow and demonstrations across the country on June 22.

It will exchange views with other like-minded student organisations on June 23 and hold a meeting to prepare its strategy on June 24.

The BCL will also exchange views with professionals and intellectuals from June 25 to 27.
